Yesterday, with the help of Dr. Byrd and his wonderful, wonderful staff I made the decision to go forward with the arthroscopic surgery on Sep 24th, 2009. If you follow my blog then you know I have been conservative as possible in coming to this decision, suggested by 3 Orthopaedic surgeons. I followed over a year of Physical Therapy, recieved the cortisone injections (which helped for a very long time), restricted lifestyle, etc. This was not a decision made lightly.
Had it been a matter of not being able to run, or participate in some activities I would have still waited. Unfortunately over the last year it has stolen my quality of life. At this time I can no longer load and unload the dishwasher without significant pain. I cannot take the kids to the park, the zoo, etc. And that's no way to live when there's an option worth trying.
I know so many of you are trying to make this decision as well, or are axious to know how it feels, what will happen, etc. My goal is to be as detailed as possible throughout the process in order to provide you with a glimpse into a normal mom's life approaching and having this surgery.
Next week I will have a CT scan and will get more info. I only have a week to prepare. I'll be cleaning and organizing our house so that we can keep things in order while I'm on crutches. Dr. Byrd said to expect anywhere from 2-8 weeks on crutches depending on the amount of damage and work that needs to be done once he is inside the joint. In my mind I'm kind of betting on four weeks. But remember, I have a one year old boy and a three year old daughter...no easy task!!! This is one of the reasons I was so very careful not to rush into surgery.
Will keep you posted. Thanks for your support, friendship and loyalty to this site. I am thankful not to go this road alone!
Vanessa:)
